Securely connecting to your AWS FSx Drive

We understand how important it is to keep your networks and data safe. That’s why many organizations decide to host their critical files on private, internal networks behind secure firewalls and other security provisions.

Savant is your data security partner and is designed to help your organization maintain security and control. For organizations needing to process files securely located on internal networks, we offer safe methods to connect to your privately hosted data, while keeping your networks and data safe and secure.

Many organizations choose AWS FSx to manage their internal file storage. In this guide, we’ll review how to securely connect Savant to your AWS FSx drive for Windows File Server.

What is AWS FSx?

Amazon FSx simplifies and reduces the cost of deploying, managing, and expanding advanced, high-performance file systems in the cloud. It caters to diverse workloads with its robust reliability, security, scalability, and extensive features.

Leveraging cutting-edge AWS compute, networking, and storage technologies, Amazon FSx delivers exceptional performance and reduced total cost of ownership. As a fully managed service, it takes care of hardware provisioning, patching, and backups, allowing you to concentrate on your applications, end users, and business operations.

How does Savant securely connect to AWS FSx?

Savant connects to AWS FSx via an SSH-enabled SFTP service on the Windows File Server. All parts of the Savant platform, including Savant’s connection to AWS FSx, securely encrypt data in-transit and at-rest, provide secure read and write access between Savant and AWS FSx.

How is the Savant connection created?

To connect Savant to AWS FSx, you will need to install an SFTP service on your Windows File Server. Follow these steps to install SFTP and create the connection to Savant:

  1. Install an SFTP service on the Windows File Server with AWS FSx mounted

    1. We recommend OpenSSH for your SFTP service, but other services should work too.

  2. Test the SFTP service

    1. Verify that you can connect to the SFTP server using client software such as WinSCP or FileZilla.

    2. Once connected, also verify that you can read and write FSx drive files via SFTP.

  3. Open the SFTP port to Savant IPs

    1. SFTP port: 22

    2. Savant worldwide app IPs (non-EU):

      1. 35.188.163.165

      2. 35.188.99.19

      3. 3.20.192.126

      4. 3.136.174.242

      5. 3.21.111.255

    3. Savant EU app IPs:

      1. 34.22.229.169

      2. 34.79.28.74

      3. 34.251.112.30

      4. 54.220.36.32

      5. 63.32.243.56

  4. Configure the SFTP connection in Savant

    1. Go to Systems in your Savant workspace.

    2. Click New System.

    3. Select the SFTP connector.

    4. Enter SFTP server address and port.

    5. Choose and configure your authentication method:

      1. Username / Password

      2. Savant public key

        1. Add the key to C:\Users\username\.ssh\authorized_keys on the Windows File Server.

      3. Private key

        1. Private keys are encrypted before saving to Savant. The encryption key is not accessible by Savant employees and rotated regularly.
