Welcome to the Tableau Connector Setup guide!

In this article, we will cover the following:

  • Authenticating Tableau in Savant

  • Connecting Data from Tableau

  • Publishing Data to Tableau

Authenticating Tableau in Savant

First, open separate tabs in your browser for Savant and Tableau and login to both.

In Savant, click on "Data" in the top menu, and toggle to the "Systems" option in the upper left of the page. Click the "New System" button.

This will take you to a page with a list of all available connected systems in Savant. Scroll or search among the selections for Tableau and select the icon, then click "Next".

There are two methods for connecting Tableau as a new system in Savant: Username & Password or Personal Access Token.

NOTE: The linked user account must have at least viewer role in Tableau.

Username & Password

The Username & Password method requires three inputs: Site Home URL, Username, and Password.

To find the Site Home URL, navigate to the home page of your Tableau Cloud account, and ensure that the URL form matches that shown in the authentication field (e.g., https://SERVER_URL/#/site/SITE_NAME/home).

Copy the URL and paste it into the respective field on the Savant authentication page.

For the Username and Password, simply input the login credentials for your Tableau user account.

Personal Access Token

The alternative authentication method is to use a Personal Access Token. This method requires three inputs: Site Home URL, Token Name and Token Secret.

To find the Site Home URL, see the instructions in the Username & Password section above.

Next, you will need the Token Name and Token Secret. From your Tableau account, navigate to the My Account Settings page.

Scroll down the page to the Security section until you reach a header for "Personal Access Tokens."

Enter a new Token Name, and click "Create new token".

In the pop-up window, click "Copy to clipboard" to copy the Token Secret.

In Savant, enter the Token Name and Token Secret into their respective fields in the Savant authentication window.

Authenticate & Confirm

With all three fields complete, click "Authenticate". This will load a page where you can choose to rename your system and include an optional Description. Once finished, click "Confirm".

Your new Tableau system is now authenticated in Savant!

Connecting Data from Tableau

If you are working within an analysis, on the top left side of your canvas, click the Add Dataset button shown below, and select your Tableau connection.

If you are not currently within an analysis, you can add your connection by navigating to Data and selecting New Dataset. Select your authenticated Tableau system from the list of available options and click Next.

In the Configure Dataset section, you will see drop-down menus for Schema and Object.

Schema refers to Tableau Workbooks and Object refers to Tableau Views. Select the Workbook and View that you want to use for your dataset and click Next.

Lastly, give a name and description to your new dataset and click Confirm.

Your Tableau system is now added as a dataset within your analysis!

Publishing Data to Tableau

Savant supports writing to both Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server.

Supported operations include Create Data Source and Replace Data Source.
